Adult Winter Reading Club Book Reviews: Week Four

Here are this week’s reviews from the members of the Adult Winter Reading Club:

First You Try Everything by Jane McCafferty

This read was the opposite of a love story and tells the tale of the demise of Evie and Ben’s marriage.  The story was set in Pittsburgh, PA and is told in alternating viewpoints.  The author does a nice job with descriptions of settings and characters.  Unfortunately I did not connect with any of the characters and found the story had difficulty moving forward.

Higher Returns from Safe Investments by Marvin Appel

The content of this book mirrors the title exactly.  You don’t need money to read it, but reading it may help you make some.

James Bond – The Secret World of 007  by Alastair Dougall

This beautiful book is filled with photographs and information on the Bond movies.  It covers each movie, each James Bond actor, the women, the gadgets, and the cars used in the movies.

A very nice trip down memory lane.

The Maytrees by Annie Dillard

Beautifully written, very poetic, and ephemeral.

Wander Dust by Michelle Warner

This is a book with an American slant to the Harry Potter establishment.  The main character, Seraphina Parrish, turns 16 and begins to discover powers and a world unknown to her before.  This novel’s mythology centers around teams made of a Wanderer, a Protector, and a Seer.  I can’t wait for the rest of the trilogy.
